How naming by Nakshatra works
Vedic astrology divides the sky into 27 lunar mansions (Nakshatras) of 13°20′ each, and each Nakshatra into four padas of 3°20′. Every pada has a traditional starting sound, so a baby born with the Moon in a particular pada is given a name beginning with it. Nakshatra names are usually used for the Janma Rashi name in rituals and horoscopes, alongside whichever name the family uses every day.
Frequently asked questions
How are baby names chosen by Nakshatra?
Each of the 27 Nakshatras has four padas, and each pada has a starting sound. The baby’s Nakshatra and pada come from the Moon’s position at birth, and the name begins with that sound.
How do I find my baby’s Nakshatra?
Use the free Nakshatra calculator with the exact date, time and place of birth.
Is it compulsory to follow the Nakshatra letter?
No. It is a tradition many families follow, not a rule. Treat it as a starting point alongside meaning and family preference.
Starting sounds follow the most widely used North-Indian tradition; some regions and families use slightly different syllables, so check with your family priest or astrologer if a specific tradition matters to you. The Nakshatra depends on the Moon’s position at the exact birth time, place and date.
