Of all the factors in Gun Milan, Nadi is worth the most: 8 of the 36 points. It is also the factor that most often leaves a couple with a score of zero in that column, and the one families worry about most. Here is what Nadi is, how to find yours, and how it is usually handled.

What Nadi means in Gun Milan

The 27 Nakshatras are divided into three groups called Nadis: Aadi, Madhya and Antya. Traditional texts associate them with the three humours of Ayurveda (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) and, by extension, with health and the constitution of the family line. In Gun Milan the rule is simple. If the two partners belong to different Nadis, the couple scores the full 8 points. If they share the same Nadi, the Nadi koota scores 0, and the match is said to have Nadi dosha.

The Nadi of every Nakshatra

The groups run through the Nakshatras in a repeating pattern of Aadi, Madhya, Antya, Antya, Madhya, Aadi. That gives nine Nakshatras to each Nadi:

NadiNakshatras
AadiAshwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada
MadhyaBharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada
AntyaKrittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Shravana, Revati

Because the Nadi follows the Moon Nakshatra, you can look yours up in a second with the Nakshatra calculator and compare it with your partner's.

How often does Nadi dosha happen?

With three Nadis, roughly one couple in three shares one. That is why it is so common to hear of it, and why most astrologers treat it as something to examine carefully rather than a reason to end a discussion on its own. You can see the effect for any pair: each Nakshatra page in our Gun Milan by Nakshatra guide shows which partner Nakshatras share its Nadi.

Exceptions traditions mention

Many texts and practising astrologers describe situations in which the dosha is considered cancelled or reduced. These vary by tradition, so treat the list as an overview of what you may hear, not as rules we apply automatically:

Our calculator shows the raw Nadi score (0 or 8) and flags the dosha, and it does not silently apply exceptions. That keeps the result easy to understand and easy to compare with what your family priest says.

What the traditional reasoning says, and what modern medicine says

The traditional explanation is that two people with the same constitution might pass on a concentrated tendency to their children. There is no scientific support for linking a Nakshatra to a person's constitution or to inherited health. If you are concerned about genetic or hereditary conditions, the sound route is medical: genetic counselling and tests ordered by a doctor, not a horoscope. Many families do both, honouring tradition and checking medically, and that is a perfectly reasonable position.

A calm way to handle a Nadi dosha result

  1. Check that the birth times are accurate. A few minutes can move the Moon into a different Nakshatra, and with it the Nadi.
  2. Look at the rest of the table. A zero in Nadi can still sit alongside a strong total.
  3. Ask a trusted Jyotishi to review both charts and whether an exception is relevant in your family tradition.
  4. Keep the astrology in proportion. It is one input among many in a decision about people.

Frequently asked questions

What is Nadi dosha?

It arises when both partners have the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya), which scores 0 of 8 in the Nadi koota of Gun Milan.

Is Nadi dosha a reason not to marry?

Traditions differ. Many families ask a Jyotishi to review the full charts and consider exceptions. It should not replace medical advice about hereditary health, which is the job of a doctor and genetic counselling.

How do I find my Nadi?

Find your Moon Nakshatra with the Nakshatra calculator, then look it up in the table above.

Can a few minutes of birth time change the Nadi?

Yes, if the Moon is close to a Nakshatra boundary, which is why accurate birth time matters.
