Two babies born on the same day, in the same city, an hour apart can have very different Vedic charts. The reason is the Lagna — the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Because the Earth turns once a day, all twelve signs rise in turn within 24 hours, so each Lagna lasts about two hours — but not exactly two hours.
A real day: New Delhi, 8 Nov 2026
Here are the Lagna windows computed by our engine for 2026-11-08 (local time, New Delhi):
| Rising sign | Window | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer | 00:00–00:30 | 0 h 30 min |
| Leo | 00:30–02:48 | 2 h 18 min |
| Virgo | 02:48–05:04 | 2 h 16 min |
| Libra | 05:04–07:24 | 2 h 20 min |
| Scorpio | 07:24–09:42 | 2 h 18 min |
| Sagittarius | 09:42–11:46 | 2 h 4 min |
| Capricorn | 11:46–13:28 | 1 h 42 min |
| Aquarius | 13:28–14:56 | 1 h 28 min |
| Pisces | 14:56–16:20 | 1 h 24 min |
| Aries | 16:20–17:56 | 1 h 36 min |
| Taurus | 17:56–19:52 | 1 h 56 min |
| Gemini | 19:52–22:06 | 2 h 14 min |
| Cancer | 22:06–00:00 | 1 h 54 min |
Notice that the longest and shortest windows differ by well over an hour. The Moon's Nakshatra that day was Swati (it ends at 7:24 AM) — a chart is the combination of all of these.
Why the windows are unequal
The ecliptic (the Sun's path) meets the horizon at a slant that depends on your latitude, so some signs sweep across the horizon quickly and others slowly. Averaged over a year at New Delhi's latitude, the share of the day each sign spends rising is:
| Sign | Share of a day |
|---|---|
| Aries | 6.6% |
| Taurus | 8.2% |
| Gemini | 9.3% |
| Cancer | 9.9% |
| Leo | 9.5% |
| Virgo | 9.5% |
| Libra | 9.7% |
| Scorpio | 9.7% |
| Sagittarius | 8.6% |
| Capricorn | 7.1% |
| Aquarius | 6.1% |
| Pisces | 5.9% |
If births were evenly spread through the day, you would expect Aries and Pisces risings to be about half as common as Cancer or Libra risings — simply because they are shorter.
What this means for planning
- The exact minute matters most for the Lagna and the Navamsa (D-9) chart derived from it.
- The windows move with the city: the same date in Mumbai or London has different start and end times.
- This is why celebrity pages on AstroTwinz show the birth-data reliability: without a recorded birth time the Lagna cannot be known.
Frequently asked questions
How long does each Lagna last?
On average about two hours, but between roughly one and a half and three hours depending on the sign, the season and your latitude.
Is the Lagna the same everywhere on Earth at the same moment?
No. The rising sign depends on your longitude and latitude, so a birth at the same clock time in different cities has different Lagna windows.
