When you look up a celebrity's Moon sign or Lagna on a chart site, you are trusting a number that begins with one fact: when the person was born. For many public figures that fact is surprisingly hard to pin down. This article explains where birth data comes from, which parts of a chart survive uncertainty and which do not, and how we label each profile so you know what to trust.
Where birth data comes from
Birth dates of public figures are usually well documented in biographies and reference works. Birth times are much rarer. They survive in birth certificates quoted in biographies, hospital records, the person's own statements, or family and astrologer records. Each source has a different reliability: a quoted birth certificate is strong, a family memory is weaker, and a time guessed from a story is weakest. Some sites also "rectify" a chart, adjusting the time until the life events fit the astrology, which makes the result circular and which we do not use.
What survives a missing or rounded birth time
| Placement | Needs | If the time is unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Sun sign | Date | Reliable (except on a sign-change day) |
| Moon sign | Date and approximate time | Usually reliable; the Moon crosses a sign boundary on about one day in six |
| Moon Nakshatra | Date and approximate time | The Moon changes Nakshatra about daily, so the answer may be one off |
| Lagna | Exact time and place | Not knowable: the rising sign changes every two hours |
This is why a profile with only a date can still be placed by Sun sign, and sometimes by Moon sign, but never by Lagna.
How we grade each profile
- Accurate: a documented source gives the birth time. These profiles show the full chart including Lagna.
- Reference: the time is published in a reference work but we cannot verify the original source. The chart is shown with a note.
- Uncertain or no time: only the date and place are known, so the Moon sign and Nakshatra are approximate and the Lagna is withheld.
Profiles with very weak data are kept out of our sitemap. You can browse each category on the celebrity charts page and filter by Nakshatra at Celebrities by Nakshatra.
Time zones and history
Even a correct clock time can be wrong when converted to a universal time. India introduced its single time zone, IST, in 1947, and before that cities used local mean time or Bombay Time. Daylight saving has been used and abandoned in many countries. We convert each recorded local time using the historical time-zone rules for the birthplace where we know it, rather than today's offset, which matters for people born before 1947 in India or during wartime clock changes elsewhere.
How to use this when you play with celebrity matches
- Treat Moon sign and Nakshatra matches as informative for any grade.
- Treat a Lagna match as meaningful only for an Accurate profile.
- Remember that a match is a cultural curiosity, a way to compare yourself with someone you admire. It does not say anything about talent or success.

Frequently asked questions
Why do some celebrities have no Lagna?
The Lagna needs an exact birth time. If it is unknown or uncertain we show only the Moon sign and Nakshatra.
What does the Accurate grade mean?
A documented source gives the birth time, so the whole chart, including Lagna, is shown.
Can a few minutes change a chart?
Yes. The Lagna moves about one degree every four minutes, and the Moon may cross a Nakshatra or sign boundary.
Do you adjust times to fit a life story?
No. We do not rectify birth times.
