Moon Sign, Sun Sign and Lagna: What Each Means in a Vedic Chart (and Which One to Use)

Newspaper horoscopes use your Sun sign. Most Indian astrologers, panchangs and marriage matches use your Moon sign. A birth chart is built around your Lagna. These three are different things, they come from different positions in the sky, and they change at very different speeds. Knowing which is which clears up most of the confusion about "my sign".

Sun sign: where the Sun was

The Sun spends about a month in each of the 12 zodiac signs, so your Sun sign depends only on your birth date. In the Western (tropical) zodiac it changes around the 20th of each month. In the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac it changes around the 14th to 17th, because the sidereal zodiac sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical one. That is why many people born in, say, the first half of the month are a different Sun sign in Vedic astrology than the one they grew up reading about.

Moon sign (Rashi): where the Moon was

The Moon passes through a sign in roughly two and a quarter days, so you need your birth date and a reasonable birth time to know it. In Indian practice the Moon sign, called Rashi, is the one people usually mean by "my sign". It is used for name starting letters, for Gun Milan, for the daily rashifal, and for the planetary transit rules (Gochar) that astrologers apply to current events. Your Moon Nakshatra is a finer division of the same Moon position.

Lagna (Ascendant): the sign rising at birth

The Lagna is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of birth. The Earth turns once a day, so all 12 signs rise in turn within 24 hours, each for roughly two hours. A difference of an hour in the birth time can therefore change your Lagna, while it may change your Moon sign not at all. Lagna also depends on the latitude and longitude of the birthplace, which is why the same minute produces a different Lagna in Delhi and in London. Our Lagna windows guide shows this with a real example.

In a Vedic chart the Lagna is the starting point. The 12 "houses" are counted from it, and it sets which planet is the chart's main ruler.

Three common mistakes

  1. Mixing zodiacs. Reading a Vedic Moon sign against a Western horoscope column gives the wrong sign about four times out of five, because the two zodiacs are about 24 degrees apart. Always check which system a source uses.
  2. Using a Sun sign for Gun Milan. Marriage matching needs the Moon Nakshatra and pada, not the Sun sign. Two people can be a Sun-sign "perfect match" and still score poorly, or the reverse.
  3. Trusting a rounded birth time. Many records are rounded to the nearest 15 or 30 minutes, or to "morning". That is fine for a Sun or Moon sign in most cases but not for the Lagna, which moves a degree every four minutes. If the time is uncertain, treat the Lagna as uncertain too.

Check yours in two minutes

Enter your birth details in the Nakshatra calculator for your Moon sign and Nakshatra, or create a free Vedic Kundli to see the Lagna as well. If you do not know your birth time, the calculator checks both ends of the day and tells you plainly when the answer is ambiguous, rather than guessing. Parents often find the time on a hospital discharge summary, a birth certificate from the hospital, or in an old family horoscope.

A word on certainty

These placements are a shared language for ritual, timing and conversation. We calculate them as precisely as astronomy allows, and we say plainly when a birth time is uncertain, so that the numbers at least are never the weak link.

Method: Sun and Moon longitudes from the Swiss Ephemeris, converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa. The Lagna uses the standard house calculation for the birth latitude and local sidereal time. Last reviewed 25 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Sun sign and Moon sign?

The Sun sign is where the Sun was on your birth date and changes monthly. The Moon sign is where the Moon was and changes every two to three days. Indian astrology mostly uses the Moon sign.

What is Lagna?

The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your exact birth time and place. It changes about every two hours.

Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, about 24 degrees behind the Western tropical zodiac.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For the Sun sign, no. For the Moon sign a rough time is usually enough. For the Lagna you need the exact time and place.
