About the festival
The puja is done in the evening during Pradosh Kaal (from sunset for about 2 hours 24 minutes), ideally while the Taurus (Vrishabha) ascendant — a fixed sign — is rising. The window shown below is the overlap of those two.
A lit diya is placed outside the house after dark for Yama (Yama Deepam). Many families clean the home, buy something new and begin their Diwali preparations on this day.
If you are buying gold or silver, the same Pradosh window is what most families follow for the puja; shops are open on the full day.
How these timings are calculated
Our panchang engine uses the Swiss Ephemeris to compute the Sun and Moon positions, then derives tithi start and end, sunrise, sunset, moonrise and the rising sign for each city's latitude, longitude and local time zone. It is the same engine that powers our daily panchang.
Dates and timings are calculated for each city with the Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsa) and can differ by a day or by minutes from other almanacs and local traditions. For your family's custom, confirm with your priest or local panchang.
