About the festival
Observed mainly in North India, the fast is kept by married women for their husbands' well-being; many unmarried women and some husbands also fast.
The day starts before sunrise with sargi (a pre-dawn meal). Through the day there is no food or water; in the evening the Karwa Chauth katha is read and the puja is done, then the fast is broken after moonrise with the moon seen through a sieve.
Because moonrise differs from city to city by several minutes, the moonrise time in your own city is the number that matters most — see the table below.
How these timings are calculated
Our panchang engine uses the Swiss Ephemeris to compute the Sun and Moon positions, then derives tithi start and end, sunrise, sunset, moonrise and the rising sign for each city's latitude, longitude and local time zone. It is the same engine that powers our daily panchang.
Dates and timings are calculated for each city with the Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsa) and can differ by a day or by minutes from other almanacs and local traditions. For your family's custom, confirm with your priest or local panchang.
