About the festival
The puja is done in the morning while Pratipada is on at sunrise. Many families make a cow-dung Govardhan figure and circle it.
In Gujarat the same day is the new year (Bestu Varas) of the Vikram Samvat calendar.
Temples prepare large annakut offerings of grains and sweets which are then shared as prasad.
How these timings are calculated
Our panchang engine uses the Swiss Ephemeris to compute the Sun and Moon positions, then derives tithi start and end, sunrise, sunset, moonrise and the rising sign for each city's latitude, longitude and local time zone. It is the same engine that powers our daily panchang.
Dates and timings are calculated for each city with the Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsa) and can differ by a day or by minutes from other almanacs and local traditions. For your family's custom, confirm with your priest or local panchang.
