Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated on the Amavasya of Kartik. Lakshmi–Ganesh Puja is done in the evening during Pradosh Kaal, ideally in the Taurus (Vrishabha) ascendant, a fixed sign that is traditionally preferred for settling Lakshmi at home.

About the festival
The Lakshmi Puja muhurat is the overlap of Pradosh Kaal (from sunset for about 2 hours 24 minutes) and the Vrishabha lagna window, on the day when Amavasya is present in Pradosh. That is why the festival date can be the evening before the Amavasya tithi ends.
Families light diyas, decorate the home with rangoli, worship Lakshmi and Ganesh, and share sweets. Business communities also perform Chopda Pujan (ledger worship) around this time.
Some traditions also worship during Nishita Kaal (midnight); the muhurat shown here is the widely followed Pradosh window.
How these timings are calculated
Our panchang engine uses the Swiss Ephemeris to compute the Sun and Moon positions, then derives tithi start and end, sunrise, sunset, moonrise and the rising sign for each city's latitude, longitude and local time zone. It is the same engine that powers our daily panchang.
Dates and timings are calculated for each city with the Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsa) and can differ by a day or by minutes from other almanacs and local traditions. For your family's custom, confirm with your priest or local panchang.
